This proseminar aims at exposing students to modern research topics in the field of experimental nano- and quantum physics, which is one of the cornerstones in research at the Basel physics department. Concrete learning objectives include:

  • To expand knowledge of quantum and nanophysics
  • To learn why this area of physics is interesting, special and useful
  • To get acquainted with current topics in research in Basel and beyond
  • To learn how to read and understand research papers
  • To learn how to present scientific results in a concise and comprehensive way

Students are welcome to suggest topics particularly relevant to their interests (subject to approval). Further, a list of suitable topic suggestions is provided. This year the following topics are suggested:

  1. Entanglement between two micromechanical oscillators
  2. Topological Josephson Junction
  3. The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Paradox in a many-body system
  4. Probing Majorana wavefunctions
  5. Redefinition of the kilogram assisted by atom interferometry
  6. Spin relaxation of a single-electron
  7. Spin qubits in silicon carbide for future quantum networks
  8. Strong spin-photon coupling in silicon
  9. Heterogeneous Quantum Networks
  10. Noise Suppression in Spin Qubits
  11. Intensity squeezed light for sub-shot-noise microscopy
  12. Entanglement Distribution in Space
